6th Annual Family Emergency Preparedness Day a HUGE success 9/11/2010

The 6th annual Family Emergency Preparedness Day at Glasgow Park on September 11th was a resounding success! Communication Corps gave out loads of literature on Amateur Radio, signed up one prospective student for the next class and had some success on the air using a horizontal loop antenna consisting of 80 feet of wire, ten feet above the ground with a matching counterpoise lying on the ground, fed with an SGC Auto-tuner. We contacted Serbia, Northern Ireland, and Germany on 17 meter SSB. Not bad for an NVIS [near vertical incidence skywave] antenna that is supposed to be best for local communications!! On 40 meters we had a chat with Greg, N3TU in Newark and someone in Ohio with good signal reports from both, more like it for an NVIS antenna.

House Concurrent Resolution No. 50 received

State of Delaware House Concurrent Resolution No 50 in printed form was finally received on July 16th. The Resolution recognizes the month of June as Amateur Radio Month in Delaware. Thanks to Representative Larry Mitchell and Senator Margaret Rose Henry for their joint sponsorship of this annual resolution.

Communication Corps finished the ham radio class on June 25th and the Northern Delaware VE testing team gave the FCC tests at WDEL/WSTW on Saturday June 26th. All six students who finished the class on Friday, passed their FCC level 2 Technician class Amateur Radio license exams and all licenses showed up on the FCC database on July first.

New Castle County Communication Corps and the Emergency Operations Group maintain their perfect record. Two students took the abbreviated class in May. They both completed the course in 16 hours instead of the normal 24 hours of classroom instruction with lots of self-study and reading on their own. Both passed their FCC Element 2 Technician Class license exam. One of them missed getting his General by three questions without ever opening a book on THAT level.

February Blizzards-K3NCC operations

The New Castle County Communication Corps coordinated New Castle County ARES®/RACES and combined, logged nearly 300 man-hours of communications during the back-to-back blizzards of February 2010. K3NCC was net control in the New Castle County Emergency Operations Center for the duration of both activations.

The team assisted the State and County by providing live road and weather conditions, communications with the two Red Cross Shelters, and transporting essential personnel to and from County, plus and a medical facility. All the information reported to the net was entered into the Incident Master database for everyone in Emergency Management throughout the State to see and utilize.

Instructions for registering are listed with each course.

All ARES/RACES members in New Castle County are encouraged to take, as an absolute minimum, IS-22, ICS-100, ICS-700, ICS-200, and ICS-800.b. Even though this level of training is available online from FEMA, you get a better understanding by taking them in a classroom setting.

Amateurs taking DEMA courses should use VOL for the discipline on the registration form and Communication Corps. as the agency when signing in.
